As a greenfield community and an open technology platform, Masdar City offers manufacturers and software developers opportunities to develop, test and validate their technologies in a large-scale, real-world environment that isn’t available anywhere else.
Through product and service co-development partnerships, Masdar City offers a unique platform for companies to pursue commercialisation in five cleantech technology areas that have strong global market demand, are needed in Masdar City, and benefit from the city’s built environment, geography and climate.
These technology areas are:
This includes developing next-generation building management systems that manage multiple buildings and are integrated with a utility’s distribution management systems, as well as other building technologies. This focus area benefits from Masdar City’s investment in, and experience with, buildings and infrastructure, as well as Masdar Institute’s research capabilities.
This area seeks to develop intelligent transport systems (software and services) that integrate electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, logistics and fleet management, car sharing, communications, traffic management, and other applications. This technology area benefits from the city’s existing transportation infrastructure.
This area draws on Masdar City’s extensive know-how and detailed work in the area of sustainable city operations. It would look to provide content, data and analytics in software applications, such as smart city municipal operations. This area would benefit from the city’s detailed work in calculating, monitoring and managing its ecological footprint across all aspects of municipal activity, from the planning and designing phases, through construction and during operation.
The goal is to co-develop next-generation energy-efficient lighting applications and controllers across a range of building settings, benefitting from Masdar City’s mixed-use built environment that ranges from residential, commercial and academic to retail, community and outdoors/street lighting.
Already running cutting-edge cooling pilots, Masdar City has enormous experience in this field – from absorption chillers to geothermal to district cooling – and would work to co-develop and commercialise cooling solutions that could result in a significant reduction in demand for electricity to power air conditioning.
